India approves export of up to 654 MW power to Nepal amid flood damage

New Delhi, Sept 14 (TNT): The Ministry of Power has approved export of power to Nepal for 18 hours a day from September 13 to December 31, 2026, to help meet the country’s additional electricity requirements following recent floods.

Under the approval, up to 600 MW of power can be exported through the Muzaffarpur-Dhalkebar 400 kV double-circuit line and up to 54 MW through the Tanakpur-Mahendranagar 132 kV single-circuit line, an official release said on Monday.

The quantum of power to be exported from January 2027 will be reviewed in December 2026.

The recent floods have caused significant damage to hydropower infrastructure in Nepal, reducing its domestic power generation capacity and creating an additional requirement for electricity.

The approval is expected to help Nepal meet its power requirements during the difficult period and further strengthen energy cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.

India remains committed to supporting Nepal and strengthening bilateral cooperation in the energy sector, the Ministry added.
