Hyd: CBI court sentences former CCI official, wife in DA case
Hyderabad, Sept 12 (TNT): A CBI court in Hyderabad has sentenced a former Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) official to five years’ rigorous imprisonment in a Disproportionate Assets (DA) case, while his wife was awarded four years’ imprisonment.
The court on Friday convicted Majeti Venkata Bhavani Prasad, then serving as Cotton Purchase Officer at CCI, Warangal, and his wife Majeti Priyanka in the case.
Prasad was sentenced to five years’ rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 1 lakh, while Priyanka was sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 50,000, the Agency said in a release here.
The CBI had registered the case on November 3, 2016, alleging that Prasad, with the alleged abetment of his wife, had accumulated assets and pecuniary resources worth Rs 94.17 lakh in his name and in the names of his family members during the check period from January 1, 2010, to February 21, 2015.
According to the agency, the assets were 291.73 per cent disproportionate to his known sources of income, and he could not satisfactorily account for them.
