Hyd: Syed Akbaruddin appointed Part-time Non-Official Director on RBI Central Board

Hyderabad, Aug 25(TNT): Ambassador Syed Akbaruddin, Dean of the Kautilya School of Public Policy (KSPP) at GITAM Deemed to be University and former Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations, has been appointed as a Part-time, Non-Official Director on the Central Board of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

The appointment, for a period of four years from the date of notification or until further orders, whichever is earlier, was notified on August 22, 2026, by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.

Along with Akbaruddin, Annie George Mathew and Janmejaya Kumar Sinha have also been appointed as Part-time, Non-Official Directors on the RBI Central Board.

In a release on Tuesday, GITAM Deemed to be University congratulated Akbaruddin on the appointment and said his vast experience in diplomacy, international affairs and public policy would add value to his new responsibility.

A 1985-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, Akbaruddin served as India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York from 2016 to 2020.

During his tenure, he represented India at key multilateral forums and worked on issues including counter-terrorism, climate change, sustainable development and international peace and security.

He earlier served as the spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs from 2012 to 2015 and headed External Relations and Policy Coordination at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna from 2006 to 2011.

Akbaruddin has also held several diplomatic assignments, including postings in Cairo, Riyadh and Jeddah, besides serving in senior roles at the Ministry of External Affairs. He was the Chief Coordinator for the India-Africa Summit held in 2015.

Currently, as Dean of the Kautilya School of Public Policy, Akbaruddin continues to contribute to public policy education and leadership development.
