Tirupati: SVIMS Observes World Breastfeeding Week
Tirupati, Aug. 7 (TNT): The Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) on Friday observed World Breastfeeding Week 2026 at Sri Padmavathi Hospital, with doctors highlighting the importance of early initiation and exclusive breastfeeding for ensuring healthy growth and development of children.
The programme was jointly organised by the Departments of Paediatrics and Gynaecology at the Paediatrics Outpatient Department of the hospital.
Addressing the gathering, SVIMS Director and Vice-Chancellor Dr. R.V. Kumar said breastfeeding should be initiated within the first hour after birth and continued exclusively for the first six months, as it enhances immunity and supports the physical and mental development of infants.
Referring to this year’s theme, “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Beginning to Life – Strengthen What Already Works,” he called upon healthcare professionals and family members to work together to promote breastfeeding.
SVIMS Dean and Head of the Department of Endocrinology Dr. Alok Sachan described breastfeeding as the best investment in a child’s future and said the government, medical institutions, Anganwadi centres and the Health Department were jointly working to create greater awareness about its benefits.
Sri Padmavathi Medical College for Women Principal Dr. Umamaheswara Rao stressed the need to dispel myths surrounding breastfeeding and create awareness among pregnant women and new mothers. He said family support was essential for successful breastfeeding.
Head of the Department of Paediatrics Dr. Puneeth and Head of the Department of Gynaecology Dr. Sravanthi said exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months provides complete nutrition and strengthens an infant’s immune system.
They said creating a supportive environment for mothers was a shared responsibility of families, healthcare professionals and society.
As part of the celebrations, prizes were presented to MBBS and Nursing students who won the poster presentation competition. The awards were presented by Dr. R.V. Kumar.
Faculty members of the Departments of Paediatrics and Gynaecology, doctors, nursing staff and other hospital personnel attended the programme.
