Visakhapatnam, Apr 2 (TNT):The Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) on Thursday reported its highest-ever cargo throughput of 91.17 million metric tonnes (MMT) for the financial year 2025–26, registering a growth of about 10.35 per cent over the previous year.
The port surpassed its earlier record of 82.62 MMT achieved in FY 2024–25, marking a significant milestone in its 92-year history.
Addressing a stakeholders’ meet, VPA Chairperson M. Angamuthu attributed the performance to coordinated efforts of port personnel, stakeholders and partner agencies, including Railways, Customs and the Andhra Pradesh government.
He said the port is targeting cargo handling of over 100 MMT in the coming years and is taking steps to sustain growth.
Later addressing a press conference, Angamuthu said VPA plans to operate Mulapeta Port in collaboration with the Andhra Pradesh government and is working on a special purpose vehicle (SPV) for the development of Duggarajapatnam Port and a shipbuilding unit.
He added that the port is moving towards handling non-dusty cargo, with plans to divert coal cargo to Mulapeta Port, while expanding operations through mechanisation.
Officials said strong growth in key commodities, including POL and crude, iron ore and fertilisers, along with improved turnaround time, higher productivity and better infrastructure utilisation, contributed to the record performance.
The port also recorded its highest single-day cargo handling and improved vessel movement efficiency during the year.
Deputy Chairperson Roshni Aparanji Korati appreciated the performance and expressed confidence in achieving the 100 MMT target in FY 2026–27.
Further expansion and capacity augmentation measures are underway, officials said.
