ULB Polls turn battleground as BJP cries foul over ‘Misuse of Police Machinery’ in Telangana

Hyderabad, Feb 9 (TNT): The ongoing Urban Local Bodies (ULB) elections in Telangana have taken a confrontational turn, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alleging that the ruling Congress government is misusing the police apparatus to tilt the electoral field in its favour.

In a complaint addressed to Director General of Police (DGP), B. Shivadhar Reddy, the BJP accused certain police officials of acting beyond their mandate during the election period, claiming their actions amounted to selective enforcement of law under political pressure.

The party said repeated representations to authorities had yielded no response, forcing it to escalate the issue.

The BJP alleged that during Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s election campaign in Miryalaguda on February 8, local police allegedly detained BJP leaders and curtailed their movement, effectively preventing them from campaigning.

The party termed the move a “calculated attempt” to silence opposition voices at a critical time in the poll process.

Framing the issue as one of institutional neutrality, the BJP argued that such actions undermine the credibility of elections and weaken democratic norms.

“When law enforcement appears to side with the ruling establishment, it raises serious questions about the fairness of the electoral process,” the party leadership reportedly stated.

The complaint, also forwarded to the Telangana State Election Commission, demands immediate corrective steps to ensure that police conduct remains impartial while the Model Code of Conduct is in force.

Political observers note that the BJP’s allegations are part of a broader opposition narrative accusing the Congress government of authoritarian tendencies during elections.

With the ULB elections entering a crucial phase, the allegations are expected to intensify the political heat in Telangana, as opposition parties accuse the Congress government of misusing the police machinery, while the ruling party is yet to issue an official response to the claims.
