TRAI revamps DND, MySpeed Apps to Empower Consumers against Spam and Monitor Network Quality

New Delhi, Feb 13 (TNT): In a significant move to strengthen consumer empowerment and data-driven regulation, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Friday announced revamped versions of its citizen-centric mobile applications ‘TRAI DND and TRAI MySpeed’ aimed at enabling telecom users to actively curb spam communications and assess the real-time performance of service providers’ networks.
India’s telecom sector currently serves more than 1.31 billion subscribers, including over one billion broadband users.
While billions of legitimate calls and SMS are exchanged every day, TRAI observed that only a small fraction of spam incidents are formally reported.
The upgraded applications are designed to bridge this gap by simplifying reporting processes, expanding access through multilingual support, and generating structured feedback to improve Quality of Service, the Regulatory Authority said in a release here.
The revamped TRAI DND application features an expanded multilingual interface to encourage wider participation across India’s diverse linguistic landscape.
It offers a simplified and feature-rich home screen for easy spam reporting and complaint tracking, faster complaint registration with reference ID-based tracking, a “Know Your Sender” feature to identify registered headers and designated 1600-number series, improved DND preference management for customised blocking of promotional communications, and enhanced support for dual-SIM smartphones.
During 2025, more than 17 lakh spam complaints were registered through the DND app, directly contributing to regulatory scrutiny and action against unregistered telemarketers and repeat offenders.
The platform is integrated with all Telecom Service Providers through APIs, ensuring complaints are transmitted and processed in line with TRAI’s regulatory framework and prescribed timelines.
The upgraded TRAI MySpeed application enables consumers to evaluate network performance under real-world usage conditions, helping them make informed choices and submit feedback for regulatory review.
In addition to measuring download and upload speeds, the app now measures latency, jitter and packet loss. It also offers video streaming and web browsing tests that simulate everyday usage, advanced options such as continuous and scheduled tests to enable drive testing across different locations and time periods, and location-based historical performance data through interactive geospatial maps.
Data collected through consumer-initiated tests is anonymised and analysed by TRAI as part of its Quality of Service oversight, strengthening evidence-based monitoring and improving network reliability.
Commenting on the launch, Anil Kumar Lahoti, Chairman, TRAI, said the revamped applications mark an important milestone in empowering consumers.
He said the apps provide a convenient and intuitive interface while addressing present-day needs, enabling users to easily report issues and reliably assess service providers’ performance.
With just a few touches, consumers can actively contribute to improving telecom service quality, he added.

The revamped TRAI DND and TRAI MySpeed applications are in the process of being made available for download on Android and iOS platforms.
TRAI reiterated its commitment to fostering a transparent, accountable and consumer-responsive telecom ecosystem, with citizens playing a central role in curbing spam and strengthening Quality of Service across the country.
