Hyderabad, Apr 6 (TNT): Telangana Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla inaugurated the “NIVRUTTI” De-Addiction Centre at Central Prison, Cherlapalli near here on Monday, aimed at strengthening rehabilitation and correctional services.
Speaking on the occasion, the Governor said substance abuse is a major public health and social concern requiring structured intervention, and noted that such initiatives align with the objectives of a drug-free society under national programmes.
Director General of Prisons & Correctional Services Soumya Mishra said the centre marks a significant step in prison reforms, focusing on counselling, therapy and sustained rehabilitation.
She said similar de-addiction centres have been established across all central prisons and the women’s prison in the state, with dedicated professional staff.
Officials said over 2,900 inmates have been screened for substance abuse, with hundreds receiving counselling and treatment under the initiative.
Later, the Governor visited the Prisoner Agricultural Colony and reviewed reformative activities, including farming, vocational training and the “Area 77” initiative, aimed at skill development and rehabilitation of inmates.
He said such efforts are crucial in transforming prisons into centres of reform and enabling inmates to reintegrate into society.
