Telangana CM Announces International-Standard Upgrade for LB, Gachibowli Stadiums

Hyderabad, Mar 28 (TNT): Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Saturday announced that the LB Stadium and Gachibowli Stadium will be upgraded to international standards to host major global sporting events in the future.

Inaugurating the Legislators’ Sports Meet here, Revanth reddy said the government is preparing a comprehensive plan to transform LB Stadium into a world-class venue and elevate Gachibowli Stadium to host international competitions.

The Begumpet Hockey Stadium will also be modernised as part of the initiative, he said.

Expressing concern over the alleged neglect of sports by the previous Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS)government, he said the current administration is committed to reviving Hyderabad’s sporting legacy and creating opportunities for athletes.

Highlighting the historical importance of LB Stadium, Revanth Reddy noted that prominent sportspersons, including former cricketer and minister Mohammad Azharuddin, trained at the venue and went on to represent the country at international levels.

The Chief Minister said the state has introduced a new sports policy and will provide incentives to those pursuing sports as a career.

He also encouraged students to take up sports alongside academics, adding that initiatives like the CM Cup are aimed at identifying and nurturing young talent.

Drawing comparisons, he pointed out that despite India’s population of 1.4 billion, Olympic success remains limited, whereas countries like South Korea have excelled with structured sports systems.

Taking a dig at the opposition, he criticised attempts to create controversy over the proposed visit of football star Lionel Messi to Hyderabad, stating that such events enhance the city’s global reputation.

Revanth Reddy said the government is promoting sports as a means to steer youth away from “farmhouse culture” and drug abuse, stressing the need to build a healthy and disciplined society through sports.

He also praised Hyderabad-based players for their contributions to football and reaffirmed the government’s resolve to restore the city’s past glory in competitive sports.

Meanwhile, the main opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) boycotted the Legislators’ Sports Meet.

Party working president K. T. Rama Rao said it was inappropriate to hold such programmes when several public issues in the state remain unresolved.
