Hyderabad, Mar 13 (TNT): A State Level Standing Committee has recommended the premature release of ‘102 life convicts’ lodged in various prisons across Telangana after examining their eligibility under government guidelines.
The committee, comprising Special Chief Secretary (Home) C. V. Anand, Secretary for Legal Affairs, Legislative Affairs and Justice B. Papi Reddy, and Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services Dr. Soumya Mishra, reviewed proposals submitted by the Prisons Department at a meeting held here on Thursday.
During the meeting, the panel examined case-wise proposals for ‘102 life convicts, including 96 men and six women’, identified from prisons across the state for premature release under Government Order No.126 dated October 27, 2025, an official release said on Friday.
Officials said the identification process was carried out in accordance with the guidelines of the Supreme Court of India as well as policies of the state and central governments.
According to officials, jail superintendents initially prepared a list of eligible prisoners with assistance from the concerned District Legal Services Authorities. The proposals, along with relevant documents and remarks from district probation officers, were forwarded to the Prisons Department headquarters.
The files were subsequently verified by senior prison officials before being placed before the standing committee for scrutiny and recommendations.
The state government will now examine the committee’s recommendations in the Cabinet and take a decision in accordance with legal provisions and directions of the Supreme Court. Following Cabinet approval, the proposal will be submitted to the Governor of Telangana for final approval, after which a government order will be issued for the release of the inmates.
Officials noted that the state government had earlier approved the premature release of 213 life convicts in July 2024 after a gap of four years.
As part of rehabilitation measures, 73 released convicts were provided employment at fuel outlets managed by the Prisons Department, while eight women inmates were given sewing machines to support their livelihood.
Other released prisoners have taken up agriculture and other occupations in their native villages based on their skills, officials added.
