Hyderabad, Jan 30 (TNT) : After redefining global cinema with Baahubali and RRR, visionary filmmaker S. S. Rajamouli is gearing up for his most ambitious spectacle yet.
His next magnum opus, Varanasi, starring Superstar Mahesh Babu, is officially locked for a massive theatrical release on April 7, 2027, perfectly timed with the festive fervour of Ugadi.
What sets Varanasi apart even before its release is its historic technical achievement — the film becomes the first Indian and first non-English movie ever to be shot in the prestigious 1.43:1 IMAX format, promising an unparalleled big-screen experience.
Billed as a Telugu-language action-adventure fantasy, Varanasi is directed by Rajamouli and co-written with his long-time collaborator V. Vijayendra Prasad.
Backed by Sri Durga Arts and Showing Business, the film boasts a formidable ensemble featuring Mahesh Babu, Prithviraj Sukumaran, and Priyanka Chopra.
Sources reveal that Rajamouli has envisioned Varanasi as a globe-trotting adventure deeply rooted in Indian cultural and spiritual themes, blending the soul of Indian mythology with the scale and emotion of classic adventure cinema.
Interestingly, talks for a Rajamouli–Mahesh Babu collaboration began way back in 2010, but destiny had bigger plans.
The project finally materialised only after the global triumph of RRR (2022).
The film was officially launched with a traditional puja ceremony in January 2025, followed by the start of principal photography in Hyderabad the next month.
With a jaw-dropping budget of ₹1,300 crore (around $150 million), Varanasi is poised to rank among the most expensive and ambitious Indian films ever made.
Adding to the excitement is a powerhouse technical team — Oscar-winner M. M. Keeravani composing the music, P. S. Vinod behind the camera, and V. Srinivas Mohan spearheading cutting-edge visual effects.
As expectations soar sky-high, Varanasi is already being hailed as a game-changer that could once again put Indian cinema on the global map — Rajamouli style.
