Sanand (Gujarat), Mar 31 (TNT): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated the semiconductor manufacturing facility of Kaynes Technology at Sanand, marking the commencement of production and underscoring India’s growing momentum in the semiconductor sector.
Modi noted that the inauguration follows closely on the heels of the Micron plant launch in the same region, highlighting the rapid development of India’s semiconductor ecosystem.
He described the milestone as evidence of the country’s accelerating capabilities in chip manufacturing.
Emphasising the significance of the project, Modi said the facility marks the entry of an Indian company into the global semiconductor supply chain and aligns with the vision of “Make in India, Make for the World.”
The plant will manufacture Intelligent Power Modules, with a significant portion of output earmarked for exports, including supplies to US-based companies.
He noted that the products will support sectors such as electric vehicles and heavy industry, both in India and globally, strengthening India’s role as a reliable semiconductor supplier.
Highlighting broader policy efforts, the Prime Minister said India’s semiconductor push began during the COVID-19 pandemic with the launch of the India Semiconductor Mission in 2021. He added that work is currently underway on multiple projects worth over ₹1.6 lakh crore across several states.
Modi also outlined the next phase, India Semiconductor Mission 2.0, aimed at developing domestic capabilities in semiconductor equipment and materials to build a full-stack ecosystem.
Citing industry estimates, he said India’s semiconductor market, currently valued at around $50 billion, is expected to cross $100 billion by the end of the decade, with strong interest from global investors.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening supply chains and technological capabilities, the Prime Minister said India is working to emerge as a global hub for semiconductor design and manufacturing, supported by policy reforms, infrastructure development, and workforce training initiatives.
