Owaisi seeks police action against Assam CM over ‘Hate Speech’

Hyderabad, Feb 9 (TNT) : A fresh political controversy has erupted after AIMIM President and Hyderabad MP,  Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday lodged a formal complaint with the Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad, seeking immediate legal action against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for alleged hate speech and actions said to be prejudicial to national integration.

In his complaint, Owaisi accused the Assam Chief Minister of repeatedly making statements over the years that allegedly target the Muslim community through public speeches, social media posts, and other platforms.

He alleged that such remarks have promoted enmity between religious communities and hurt the religious sentiments of Muslims.

The AIMIM President leader stated that in recent months the rhetoric has allegedly intensified, with what he described as a “deliberate and conscious attempt” to inflame communal passions and undermine communal harmony, fully aware of the consequences such statements could have on the secular fabric of the country.

Referring to the Supreme Court’s observations on hate speech, Owaisi cited the Court’s directions that law-enforcement agencies have a constitutional obligation to act suo motu in cases involving hate speech, warning that any inaction could amount to a serious dereliction of duty by authorities.

The complaint also highlighted a video allegedly posted on the official X (formerly Twitter) account of the Assam BJP on February 7, 2026.

According to Owaisi, the video portrayed the Assam Chief Minister armed with a firearm, allegedly targeting individuals depicted as Muslims, accompanied by captions such as “Point blank shot” and “No Mercy.”

Though the video was reportedly taken down within a day, Owaisi claimed it continues to circulate on social media platforms and was accessible nationwide, including within Hyderabad police jurisdiction.

Describing the visuals and messaging as “malicious and provocative,” Owaisi alleged that the content was intended to incite communal hatred and violence, and demanded immediate legal action against the Assam Chief Minister under applicable laws.

The move is expected to further sharpen political tensions between the BJP and AIMIM, with the issue likely to trigger a wider debate on hate speech, accountability of constitutional authorities, and the role of law enforcement in politically sensitive cases.
