Hyderabad, Apr 3 (TNT) : A National-level FIDE Rating Open Chess Tournament for the visually challenged will be held at the Devnar School for the Blind, Begumpet here, from May 6 to 10, 2026, bringing together over 400 participants from across the country.
Describing it as a historic milestone, Dr A Saibaba Goud, Founder Chairman of the Devnar Foundation for the Blind, said the event will be the largest of its kind globally to host such a large number of visually challenged players in a single tournament.
The tournament will be conducted under international FIDE rules, using specially designed tactile chessboards that enable players to identify squares and pieces, ensuring a level playing field.
Chess remains one of the most accessible indoor sports for the visually challenged, allowing participants to compete on par with sighted players through adaptive techniques, he said.
Winners of the tournament will earn the opportunity to represent India at international competitions, he added.
