MP seeks Central aid for Kakinada Gateway Port development

Kakinada, Feb 11 (TNT): Kakinada Member of Parliament Thangella Uday Srinivas has urged the Union government to extend central assistance for the early completion of the under-construction Kakinada Gateway Port, terming it a critical infrastructure project for Andhra Pradesh’s coastal economy.

Participating in the discussion on the Union Budget in Parliament on Wednesday, the MP sought sanction of funds for the Gateway Port and for setting up a shipbuilding unit under the Shipbuilding Financial Assistance Scheme and the proposed Maritime Development Fund.

Supporting the Union Budget, he said it reflected the aspirations of the common man and ensured inclusive development.

He noted that once completed, the Kakinada Gateway Port would enhance cargo handling capacity to 16 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA).

With the special efforts of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, about 33 per cent of the port construction has already been completed, with a target to finish the project by December this year, he said.

Describing the Budget as development-oriented and aligned with the vision of Vikasit Bharat, the MP welcomed higher allocations for skill development.

He particularly highlighted the increase in funding for the ports and shipping sector from ₹3,470 crore to ₹5,164 crore, and the creation of a ₹1,000-crore Maritime Development Fund, which he said would accelerate modernisation of ports and shipbuilding units in coastal regions.

The MP also appreciated the enhancement of allocation for the PM SVANidhi scheme from ₹373 crore to ₹900 crore, stating that over 33,000 petty traders in Kakinada district alone have already benefited from the initiative.

Referring to rural infrastructure, he said rural roads in Andhra Pradesh are being strengthened under the leadership of Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan.

Under PMGSY-III, approval has been granted for 3,200 km of rural roads and construction of 77 bridges, and he urged the Centre to sanction additional funds to further improve rural connectivity.
