Hyderabad, Apr 3 (TNT): Telangana Jagruti President and former BRS MP, Kalvakuntla Kavitha on Friday accused private schools of “looting” parents through steep fee hikes of 30–40% and criticised the Government of Telangana for failing to regulate fees.
Addressing a press meet here, Kavitha demanded immediate enactment of a fee regulation law and called for a special Assembly session to pass legislation.
Kavitha said around 38 lakh students are enrolled in nearly 12,000 private schools in the state, alleging that institutions are imposing an unfair financial burden on parents.
She questioned Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy over the delay in bringing a regulatory framework, despite earlier criticism of previous governments on the same issue.
She termed the State Education Commission’s report inadequate, noting that its key recommendation was the need for a legal mechanism to regulate fees in private schools and junior colleges.
Highlighting the impact on families, she said sudden fee hikes were unsustainable for poor and middle-class households and suggested that annual increases be capped at 7–8%.
Raising concerns over corporate educational institutions, including Narayana Educational Institutions and Sri Chaitanya Educational Institutions, Kavitha alleged lack of job opportunities for local youth, inadequate employee benefits, and inflated pricing of books and services.
She also flagged issues such as denial of Provident Fund benefits, poor food quality, and centralised cooking systems, and demanded inspections and strict action against erring institutions.
On higher education, she alleged that some private colleges were withholding students’ certificates over pending fee reimbursement dues, despite court directives, affecting employment and further studies.
Criticising the government’s handling of the education sector, Kavitha said continued inaction was encouraging exploitation and warned that Telangana Jagruti would launch statewide protests if corrective steps were not taken.
