Hyderabad, Feb 12 (TNT): In a move expected to bolster Japan–India collaboration in advanced technologies, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has facilitated a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Mitsubishi Electric Corporation and the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH), reinforcing industry–academia linkages with a strong business and innovation focus.
The MoU, valid from February 2026 to February 2029, will enable joint research, innovation-led projects and human resource development in high-growth technology areas such as artificial intelligence, quantum technologies and cybersecurity, the agency said in a release here on Thursday.
The collaboration is aimed at accelerating the commercial and societal adoption of research outcomes while building a globally competitive R&D talent pipeline.
JICA’s role has been pivotal through its sustained financial and qualitative support to IITH, particularly via the Japan Desk at IITH, a dedicated platform that promotes structured engagement between Japanese corporations and Indian academia.
This mechanism enabled Mitsubishi Electric to identify research synergies and formalise the partnership with IITH.
Commenting on the development, Mr. TAKEUCHI Takuro, Chief Representative, JICA India, said the collaboration reflects the increasing maturity of Japan–India cooperation in science, technology and innovation.
He noted that such partnerships are crucial for creating solutions to global challenges while strengthening long-term economic and technological ties between the two countries.
Under the agreement, Mitsubishi Electric and IITH will undertake joint research projects, academic publications, faculty and researcher exchanges, lectures, workshops and hackathons, along with student internships and specialised programmes to groom globally oriented R&D professionals. These initiatives align with JICA’s broader mandate of promoting sustainable development through innovation and capacity building.
IITH has emerged as a key hub for industry-linked research in India, with expanding engagement with Japanese universities and corporations.
For Mitsubishi Electric, the partnership supports its global co-creation strategy, leveraging academic excellence to drive foresight technologies and future-ready solutions.
