New Delhi, Apr 6 (TNT): Indian Railways has approved multiple projects worth ₹1,364.45 crore to strengthen safety, signalling and communication infrastructure across its network.
The sanctioned works include installation of Kavach safety systems on locomotives, expansion of optical fibre cable (OFC) networks and replacement of panel interlocking with advanced electronic interlocking systems across key railway zones.
Under the plan, Kavach equipment will be installed on 232 locomotives in Southern Railway at a cost of ₹208.81 crore, as part of a larger nationwide programme to deploy the indigenous train collision avoidance system.
In Northern Railway, projects worth ₹400.86 crore have been approved to strengthen the communication backbone, including laying of 2×48 fibre cables across divisions such as Ambala, Delhi and Lucknow.
Similarly, North Central Railway will see OFC network expansion over 2,196 route kilometres at a cost of ₹176.77 crore to support Kavach deployment and improve communication systems.
In South Central Railway, works worth ₹578.02 crore have been sanctioned to replace panel interlocking with electronic interlocking systems at multiple stations in Guntakal and Nanded divisions, aimed at enhancing signalling reliability and reducing manual intervention.
Officials said the projects are part of broader efforts to modernise rail infrastructure, improve operational efficiency and ensure safer train operations across high-density routes.
