New Delhi, Mar 3 (TNT): Voicing deep concern over the escalating conflict in the Iran and Gulf region, India on Tuesday urged all sides to exercise restraint and prioritise the safety of civilians.
In a statement, an official spokesperson said India had expressed concern at the onset of the conflict on February 28 and had called for restraint and de-escalation. However, the situation has since deteriorated significantly, even during the holy month of Ramadan, with the conflict intensifying and spreading to other nations.
The government noted that destruction and casualties have mounted, disrupting normal life and economic activities across the region.
As a proximate neighbour with significant strategic and economic stakes, India said the developments were a matter of serious concern.
The statement highlighted that nearly one crore Indian citizens live and work in the Gulf region, and their safety and well-being remain a top priority.
It also underscored that India’s trade and energy supply chains pass through the region, and any major disruption would have serious economic implications.
India also strongly opposed attacks on merchant shipping, noting that some Indian nationals have lost their lives or are missing in recent days due to such incidents.
Reiterating its position, India called for dialogue and diplomacy to bring about an early end to the conflict and expressed grief over the loss of lives.
Indian Embassies and Consulates in affected countries are in close contact with Indian nationals and community organisations, issuing advisories and extending assistance to those stranded.
They will continue to proactively address consular issues arising from the conflict, the statement said.
The government added that it is in touch with regional governments and key international partners, with the Prime Minister and External Affairs Minister holding discussions with their counterparts.
Stating that it is closely monitoring the evolving situation, the government said it would take appropriate decisions in the national interest.
