IJU condemns blocking of The Wire’s social media content, seeks transparency

New Delhi, Feb 11 (TNT): Indian Journalists Union (IJU) on Wednesday strongly condemned the blocking of The Wire’s Instagram page and the removal of its satirical video content from multiple social media platforms, terming the action arbitrary and unexplained.

In a joint statement, IJU President K. Sreenivas Reddy and Secretary-General Balwinder Singh said the measures were reportedly taken without prior notice or formal explanation to the media organisation, reflecting a growing intolerance towards independent journalism.

They flagged the lack of transparency around the so-called “legal request” and the confusion over responsibility for the blocking, raising concerns about due process and accountability. Emphasising that satire, criticism and commentary are integral to a free press and protected under the Constitution, the IJU demanded a clear public explanation from the authorities.

Urging the government to desist from opaque actions that undermine press freedom, the union said any attempt to silence or intimidate the media is unacceptable in a democracy.
