Hyderabad, Feb 1 (TNT) : Hyderabad Runners Society (HRS) successfully hosted the Project Champion Athletics Games 2026 at the B R Ambedkar Stadium here on Sunday, bringing together 850 students from government schools for a vibrant inter-school athletics meet.
Project Champion, the flagship social initiative of HRS, focuses on building physical literacy and active-lifestyle habits among government school children, especially in schools without Physical Training teachers by providing 30–40 minutes of structured exercises and games.
Launched in 2023 with 5 schools and 2,800 students, the programme has expanded to 14 government schools, positively impacting over 6,100 students, including 2,525 girls.
The 2026 Games marked a key milestone by offering students a professional stadium experience and exposure to structured competition.
The annual meet was planned and executed by Vijay Yargal, Outreach Lead, HRS, with technical support from the Hyderabad District Athletics Team, aided by HRS volunteers and staff.
The event featured a student march past, flag hoisting by Arun Kumar Kaliappan, and a ceremonial torch lighting symbolising inclusion, discipline, and aspiration through sport.
Competitions included 80m sprints (primary), 100m sprints (high school), 200m and 400m relay runs, and field events such as long jump and throw, conducted in a structured and inclusive format.
Medals were presented by Prashant Morparia and Ajit Mishra, alongside HRS core members Abhijeet Madnurkar and Sudhakar Silveru, celebrating both achievement and participation.
Speaking at the event, Arun Kumar Kaliappan, President, HRS, said, “Project Champion is about more than sport—it’s about access, confidence, and opportunity. Seeing 850 students compete with such energy reinforces our belief that physical literacy can truly change lives.”
