Gig Workers’ Union Flags Unhygienic Food at RGIA Canteen, Seeks Indira Mahila Shakti Canteens

Hyderabad, Mar 5 (TNT):The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers’ Union (TGPWU) on Thursday  raised serious concerns over alleged unhygienic conditions at a canteen near the parking area of Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad and urged the Telangana government to set up affordable Indira Mahila Shakti Canteens at the airport.

In a statement, the union said app-based drivers, taxi drivers and other transport workers using the facility had repeatedly complained about poor food quality and unsafe hygiene conditions.

Drivers reported the presence of beetles commonly found in stored grains and tiny white larvae in the food, indicating severe contamination and improper storage practices.

Several drivers allegedly suffered from vomiting, stomach infections and severe diarrhoea after consuming meals from the canteen, the union said.

Shaik Salauddin, Founder President of TGPWU, said drivers working at the airport spend long hours waiting for trips and depend on nearby canteens for food.

“It is shocking that at an international airport like RGIA, workers are being forced to eat contaminated and unsafe food. This is not only negligence but also a serious public health concern,” he said.

The union urged the Telangana government and Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to intervene immediately and address the issue.

TGPWU demanded an immediate inspection of the canteen by the Food Safety Department and strict action against operators found violating hygiene and food safety norms.

It also requested the establishment of government-supported Indira Mahila Shakti Canteens at the airport premises to provide clean, affordable and nutritious food to drivers, gig workers and other staff who rely on low-cost meals during long working hours.

The union warned that if immediate corrective steps were not taken, it would raise the issue through democratic protests and escalate the matter to higher authorities.
