Geotechnical Investigation Must Be Mandatory for Safe Construction: Telangana BJP Prez

Hyderabad, Apr 3 (TNT): Telangana BJP President N Ramchander Rao on Friday stressed the need to make geotechnical investigation mandatory for all construction activities to ensure structural safety and longevity.

Speaking at a technical seminar on “Importance of Geotechnical Investigation & Recommendations” held at the Institution of Engineers India Telangana State Centre in Khairatabad here, Rao highlighted the risks of neglecting soil testing before construction.

Recalling a past incident of a major building collapse in Hyderabad, he said such events led to stricter enforcement of site testing by municipal authorities.

He emphasised that geotechnical studies help determine soil strength, load-bearing capacity and overall feasibility of construction, without which buildings may face serious structural risks.

Noting rapid advancements in science and technology, including the rise of high-rise buildings and faster construction timelines, he cautioned that speed should not come at the cost of safety.

He underlined that both small and large projects must undergo comprehensive soil investigation before construction begins.

Rao also called for dedicated mechanisms within municipal bodies to strictly enforce geotechnical assessments, stating that such measures would significantly improve building safety and durability.

Highlighting future trends, he said the construction sector would evolve to develop stronger, disaster-resilient structures, alongside shifts in energy usage towards alternatives such as hydrogen, electric and solar power.

He urged engineers, officials and stakeholders in the construction sector to treat geotechnical investigation as a critical and non-negotiable aspect of all projects.
