elangana to Set Up International-Standard Disaster Management Institute

Hyderabad, Mar 20 (TNT): Telangana will establish a State Institute of Disaster Management (SIDM) with international standards to strengthen preparedness and response mechanisms, Minister for Revenue, Housing and Information & Public Relations Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy said on Friday.

Chairing a review meeting on disaster management at the Secretariat, Ponguleti directed officials to prepare detailed proposals and constitute a high-level committee with representatives from relevant departments to formulate an action plan.

He said the proposal would be placed before Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy for final approval.

The proposed institute aims to provide uniform training on disaster management to all government departments, adopt scientific methods to minimise loss of life and property, and enhance response capabilities at the grassroots level, particularly in districts.

It will also function as a premier research and policy support centre.

Emphasising a shift from reactive to proactive measures, the Minister said the government is focusing on advance preparedness to mitigate disaster impact rather than limiting efforts to relief operations.

He called for close coordination among departments to position Telangana as a model state in disaster management.

The Minister said the state is also procuring advanced equipment to tackle emergencies effectively, including real-time monitoring systems, early warning mechanisms, drones, and high-speed boats for swift response during floods, fire accidents, and other emergencies.

Officials from the Disaster Management Department, Fire Services, SDRF, HYDRAA, and ICCC attended the meeting.

Senior officials, including Special Chief Secretary (Disaster Management) Dana Kishore, Fire Services Director Vikram Singh, HYDRAA Commissioner Ranganath, ICCC Director Kamal Hassan Reddy, and Additional DGP (Special Police Battalion) Sanjay Jain, were present.
