Economic democracy must go hand in hand with political democracy: Justice Sudarshan Reddy

Hyderabad, Apr 9 (TNT): Former Supreme Court judge B. Sudarshan Reddy on Thursday said economic democracy must go hand in hand with political democracy to realise the true spirit of the Constitution.

Addressing a two-day national seminar on “Economic Reforms and the Indian Constitution: Conflict, Contradictions, and Ways Forward” organised by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University in collaboration with Government Degree College, Chanchalguda, he said B. R. Ambedkar was not only the chief architect of the Constitution but also a distinguished economist.

Justice Sudarshan Reddy said the spirit of socialism is embedded in the Constitution through the Preamble’s emphasis on equality and justice and noted that socio-economic rights were rooted in the Karachi Resolution.

BRAOU Vice-Chancellor Ghanta Chakrapani, who presided over the programme, said the Constitution must be viewed in the context of changing dynamics in higher education and stressed the need to strengthen public universities.

Keynote speaker Prabhat Patnaik, Professor Emeritus at Jawaharlal Nehru University, said governments must retain control over key sectors to ensure public welfare and called for economic policies aligned with constitutional values.

The seminar, part of Social Empowerment Week, will continue on April 10 at the university campus.
