New Delhi, April 1 (TNT): The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday briefed Central Observers ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in Assam, Kerala and the Union Territory of Puducherry, scheduled to be held on April 9.
According to an official press note , Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Dr. S.S. Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi, chaired a review meeting with observers deployed across the poll-bound regions.
A total of 282 Central Observers, including General, Police and Expenditure observers, participated in the briefing along with Chief Electoral Officers of the respective states and UT.
The Commission directed observers to ensure that elections are conducted in a free, fair and peaceful manner, without any intimidation, violence or inducement.
It emphasised strict enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct and instructed officials to take prompt action on complaints.
Observers were also asked to publicise their contact details and ensure accessibility for the public, political parties and candidates.
The Commission stressed the importance of proper training of polling personnel, timely reporting of voter turnout data, correct use of indelible ink and adherence to procedural requirements during polling.
Additionally, observers were instructed to ensure availability of basic facilities at polling stations, including mobile phone deposit counters and seating arrangements for voters in queues.
The ECI also directed that webcasting monitoring systems be thoroughly checked and trial runs conducted to ensure smooth surveillance during polling.
