CSIR–NGRI Launches Geothermal Energy Skill Training Programme

Hyderabad, Feb 23 ( TNT ): Aiming to strengthening India’s skilled workforce in the renewable energy sector, the CSIR–National Geophysical Research Institute (CSIR–NGRI)  inaugurated a specialised training programme on geothermal energy exploration under the CSIR–Integrated Skill Initiative here on Monday.

The programme, titled “Geosciences for Geothermal Energy Exploration (G2E2)”, is being conducted from February 23 to 28, 2026.

It was inaugurated by CSIR–NGRI Director Dr. Prakash Kumar in the presence of Dr. P. B. Sarolkar, former Deputy Director General of the Geological Survey of India, along with senior scientists and programme coordinators.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Kumar said it was the first time the institute was organising a dedicated training programme focused exclusively on geothermal energy exploration.

He noted that geothermal energy holds significant potential as a reliable base-load renewable energy resource and could play an important role in India’s transition towards sustainable and low-carbon energy systems.

He said the initiative aligns with national missions such as Atmanirbhar Bharat and Skill India by bridging the gap between scientific research and industry requirements and enhancing employability in emerging energy domains.

Dr. Sarolkar highlighted India’s geothermal potential, particularly in tectonically active regions, and emphasised the need for systematic exploration strategies supported by advanced geophysical imaging, hydrogeochemical characterisation and integrated geological modelling.

Programme coordinators said the training includes interdisciplinary modules on heat-flow studies, hydrogeochemistry and geophysical techniques such as gravity, magnetic, resistivity (ERT, EVRI), magnetotellurics and seismic methods for geothermal exploration.

Participants from various institutions across the country are attending the programme, which aims to equip them with practical skills required for geothermal resource assessment and exploration.
