Cochlear launches World’s First Smart Hearing Implant System in India on World Hearing Day

Hyderabad, Mar 2 (TNT): Cochlear, a global leader in implantable hearing solutions, on Monday announced the launch  the of  ‘ Cochlear™ Nucleus® Nexa® System’ in India, describing it as the world’s first and only smart cochlear implant system.

The launch coincides with World Hearing Day and comes amid growing concerns over hearing impairment in India, the company said in a release.

Around 63 million people in the country—about 6.3 per cent of the population—suffer from significant auditory impairment.

Studies indicate that over one lakh babies are born annually with some form of hearing deficiency, with four in every 1,000 newborns experiencing severe to profound hearing loss.

According to the company, the Nucleus Nexa System is the first hearing implant to feature internal memory and upgradeable firmware, allowing users to access future technological advancements without requiring surgical replacement of the implant.

Vandana Pisharody, Regional General Manager, South Asia and Southeast Asia, said “The system introduces a new category of smart hearing implants designed to deliver a more connected and future-ready hearing experience”.

Pisharody noted that the technology advancements are built on more than 20 years of research and development.

Jan Janssen, Chief Technology Officer at Cochlear, said “The Nucleus Nexa System combines over 40 years of proven reliability with a new cutting-edge chipset packed with innovative features.”

Cochlear stated that it has provided more than 750,000 hearing implants globally to date.

The Cochlear™ Nucleus® Nexa® System is available in India from March 1, 2026.
