Medaram (Mulugu District, Telangana), Jan 30: (TNT): Mr. Gareth Wynn Owen, British Deputy High Commissioner to Hyderabad, offered prayers at the Goddess Sri Sammakka–Saralamma Temple in Medaram during the ongoing Sammakka Saralamma Jatara, one of Asia’s largest tribal festivals, on Friday.
Dressed in traditional attire, Mr. Owen participated in the Thulabaram ritual and offered jaggery (bangaram) equivalent to his body weight to the revered tribal goddesses Sammakka and Saralamma.
The ritual, symbolising deep devotion, involves devotees being weighed against jaggery, which is later offered to the deities. High demand for jaggery during the festival often leads to a surge in prices.
He was accompanied by State Minister Seethakka and Mulugu District Collector Divakara T.S., who briefed him on the historical and cultural significance of the Medaram Maha Jatara. They also explained the extensive arrangements made to ensure the convenience and safety of lakhs of devotees attending the festival.
