Hyderabad, Feb 5 (TNT): Telangana State BJP president N Ramchander Rao on Thursday launched a sharp political attack on the BRS and Congress, alleging that their combined rule over the past 12 years has eroded urban governance, plunged local bodies into debt, and stalled real development in Telangana.
Addressing a meeting after unveiling a PowerPoint presentation titled “12 Years of Erosion of Urban Telangana” at Musheerabad, Rao said the 10-year BRS regime followed by the two-year Congress government had resulted in what he termed an “administrative and economic collapse” of urban areas.
The event was attended by Union Minister G Kishan Reddy and senior BJP leaders.
Rao accused the Congress of betraying public trust by failing to implement any of its “six guarantees” and 420 promises made before the elections.
He claimed that the much-publicised free bus travel scheme for women was being implemented with poorly maintained buses, endangering commuters.
Highlighting financial stress, the BJP leader said 123 municipalities in Telangana together have debts of around ₹3,600 crore, while the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation alone is burdened with nearly ₹5,000 crore.
He alleged that Urban Local Bodies were being run through commissions and corruption rather than development.
Taking aim at the Congress government’s anti-corruption claims, Rao said that despite over 1,500 officials being caught by the ACB, lack of decisive action had emboldened corruption. He accused the Congress of pushing the state into a “debt trap” by borrowing ₹80,000 crore within a year.
He also alleged that delays in releasing retirement benefits had driven several retired employees to distress.
Rao further accused the Revanth Reddy government of indulging in appeasement politics and cited statements made during the Jubilee Hills by-election campaign as evidence.
He also raised concerns over alleged attacks on Hindu temples and claimed police were diluting cases by branding offenders as “mentally ill.”
Politically targeting both rivals, Rao said large-scale defections from BRS to Congress reflected a collapse of political morality and warned voters that “a vote for BRS is effectively a vote for Congress.”
He asserted that whatever urban development had taken place was largely due to Central government support under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, claiming Telangana received nearly ₹12 lakh crore over the last 11 years through various schemes.
He cited spending on national highways, railways, AMRUT and welfare schemes such as PM SVANidhi, Mudra Yojana and Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana.
Calling for a political shift at the grassroots, Rao urged voters to back the BJP in the upcoming municipal elections with the slogan “Save Telangana – Vote for BJP”, promising transparency and what he described as genuine urban development.
The meeting was attended by BJP MPs, MLCs, Maharashtra Minister and BJP Telangana municipal elections in-charge Ashish Shelar, State General Secretary Virender Goud, senior leader BB Patil, and district presidents Bharat Goud and Lankal Deepak Reddy, among others.
