Hyderabad, Mar 13(TNT): N. Ramchander Rao, state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Telangana, on Friday said the party supports the rejuvenation of the Musi River but will oppose the demolition of houses belonging to poor and middle-class families in the name of beautification projects.
Addressing the media here, Rao said the BJP has no objection to the Musi River rejuvenation project or related presentations by the government.
However, he said the party strongly opposes the demolition of houses in areas such as Madhuban Park and Vighneshwar Colony if residents are not properly rehabilitated.
He said the Musi River should be cleaned so that water flowing from Hyderabad until it joins the Krishna River can be used for irrigation by farmers.
Citing the Sabarmati River riverfront project in Gujarat, Rao said development there was undertaken only after rehabilitating thousands of families affected by the project.
He said development should not come at the cost of people’s livelihoods.
The BJP has no objection to projects like the proposed Gandhi Sarovar or even a statue of Mahatma Gandhi, but insisted that such initiatives should not lead to the displacement of poor residents, he said.
The BJP leader also dismissed concerns about a possible shortage of fuel supplies in the country amid global tensions.
He said the Government of India, under Narendra Modi, has ensured adequate supplies of LPG, petrol and diesel, adding that India sources crude oil from multiple countries and will not face shortages.
