BC Commission urges inclusion of 40 Castes in Central OBC List before Census

Hyderabad, Mar 4 (TNT) : The Telangana Commission for Backward Classes has sought the inclusion of 40 Backward Class (BC) castes of Telangana in the Central OBC list before the commencement of the upcoming Census in the State.

In a press release issued on Wednesday , the Commission stated that as part of the Central Census programme, house listing operations in Telangana will be carried out from May 11 to June 9, 2026, followed by population enumeration from February 9 to February 28, 2027.

The Commission expressed concern that while Telangana recognises 130 castes as Backward Classes, only 90 castes from the State are currently included in the Central Government’s OBC list.

The exclusion of 40 castes may result in underreporting of the BC population in the State during the Census, it said.

It noted that the State Government and the Commission had earlier requested the Centre to include the omitted 40 castes in the Central OBC list, but no decision has been taken so far.

The Commission maintained that the Census process in Telangana should be initiated only after the inclusion of all 130 recognised BC castes in the Central OBC list.

In this regard, the Chairman of the Commission has written to K. Rama Krishna Rao, Chief Secretary to the Government, seeking necessary action to ensure the inclusion of the 40 BC castes in the Central OBC list.
