Amaravati, Apr 10 (TNT): Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Friday reiterated that the government remains committed to the welfare and development of Backward Classes and assured justice and equitable opportunities for BC communities.

Leaders of the Andhra Pradesh BC Welfare Association, led by State president Kesana Shankara Rao and National President J Srinivas Goud, met the Chief Minister at the Secretariat and submitted representations seeking various measures for the welfare of BCs.

The delegation urged the Chief Minister to take up with the Central Government the demand for reservations for BCs based on population proportion and sought enactment of a protection law for BCs at the earliest.

They also requested implementation of 34 per cent reservations in local bodies, establishment of a separate ministry for OBCs at the Centre, formulation of an OBC Sub-Plan with dedicated budgetary allocation, and filling of backlog vacancies in government departments.

Responding to the demands, Naidu said matters falling under the purview of the Central Government would be taken up through consultations and efforts would be made to address them.

He assured the delegation that the State government would continue to work towards ensuring justice and equal opportunities for Backward Classes.

The BC leaders expressed confidence that the welfare and progress of BCs would be best achieved under the present coalition government.

They appreciated several welfare initiatives taken by the government, including support for handloom weavers, free power schemes, financial assistance to fishermen during fishing ban periods, revocation of GO 217, reservations for toddy tappers, and allocation of mining opportunities to the Vaddera community.
