Amaravati, Mar 16 (TNT): Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Monday unveiled a 58-foot bronze statue of Amarajeevi Potti Sriramulu at Shakhamuru Park in Amaravati, marking the 125th birth anniversary of the leader who fasted for a separate Telugu state.
The statue, erected by the Amarajeevi Potti Sriramulu Memorial Trust, honours Sriramulu’s 58-day hunger strike and has been named the “Statue of Sacrifice.”
The monument, installed on 6.8 acres, was constructed using 26 tonnes of bronze and 42 tonnes of iron, with the first phase of the memorial completed in six months.
The second phase will include a museum, auditorium, and skill development centres.
Speaking at the event, CM Naidu said that true tribute to Amarajeevi would be achieved through the development of the state across all sectors.
Highlighting Sriramulu’s social and political contributions, the Chief Minister said the leader fought for Dalit temple entry rights, undertook a 58-day fast without water, and played a pivotal role in the formation of Andhra State and later Andhra Pradesh.
He announced initiatives including the observance of Vasavi Kanyaka Parameswari’s self-sacrifice day, renaming her birthplace as Vasavi Penugonda, and the Jal Jeevan Mission project “Amarajeevi Jaladhara.”
On the occasion, the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister also unveiled a special postal cover issued by the Department of Posts in honour of Potti Sriramulu.
The event was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, Union Minister Pemmasani Chandrasekhar, state Minsiters including IT Minister Nara Lokesh, BJP Andhra Pradesh President PVN Madhav, and other dignitaries.
