Vijayawada(Andhra Pradesh), Mar 28 (TNT): Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday urged journalists to play a proactive role in the development of the state and Amaravati, while calling for collective efforts to counter misinformation, particularly on social media.
Addressing the 11th plenary session of the Indian Journalists Union (IJU) at Tummalapalli Kalakshetram here, Naidu said Amaravati would be developed as a future-ready city with next-generation technology and sought the cooperation of media professionals in achieving this vision.
He said the coalition government is committed to the welfare of journalists and places high importance on media reports, regularly reviewing them and acting on public issues highlighted by the press.
Expressing concern over the rise of false narratives and misinformation, the Chief Minister said such trends are harmful to society and stressed the need to uphold credibility, ethics and values in journalism.
He identified social media as a major challenge in the rapid spread of misleading information.
The Chief Minister criticised attempts in the past to curb media freedom through restrictive measures and reiterated that his government is committed to ensuring a free and responsible press.
He called upon journalists to promote constructive and development-oriented reporting while continuing to question the government responsibly.
He also urged media professionals to analyse and showcase Andhra Pradesh’s progress to the world.
Naidu informed that the State Assembly has passed a resolution seeking legal status for Amaravati as the capital and forwarded it to the Central Government.
He expressed confidence that significant development in Amaravati would be visible over the next five years.
Ministers K. Parthasarathi and Nimmala Ramanaidu attended the event.
Earlier, IJU president K. Srinivasa Reddy, secretary Somasundar and Andhra Pradesh Union of Working Journalists President I.V. Subba Rao, among others, addressed the gathering.
