Airtel Payments Bank launches instant NFC-based balance update for RuPay On-The-Go Cards

New Delhi, Feb 24 (TNT ): Airtel Payments Bank on Tuesday announced the launch of an instant NFC-based balance update feature for its RuPay On-The-Go Cards enabled with the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC), allowing customers to check or update their card balance by simply tapping the card on an NFC-enabled Android smartphone.

The feature eliminates the need for commuters to visit metro station kiosks or service points, enabling a seamless, fully digital and contactless transit experience, the bank said in a release here.

Customers can update or check their card balance in real time by tapping the card on their linked smartphone after logging into their bank account or wallet through the Airtel Thanks app.

The bank said the feature was introduced on a pilot basis a few months ago to gather customer feedback and usage insights.

The pilot witnessed strong adoption and positive response, prompting the bank to roll out the facility to all RuPay On-The-Go Card users.

Executive Director ( Business Operations), Airtel Payments Bank, Ganesh Ananthanarayanan, said the initiative reflects the bank’s focus on simplifying everyday transactions and enhancing commuter convenience through innovation.

Airtel Payments Bank is among the leading issuers of RuPay On-The-Go Cards, with over five million cards issued so far.

The bank said the new feature strengthens India’s digital payments ecosystem and improves the overall public transit experience through fully digital, queue-free services.
