Hyd: KIMS Hospitals holds organ donation awareness programme

Hyderabad, Aug 3 (TNT): KIMS Hospitals, Secunderabad, on Monday organised an organ donation awareness programme under the national campaign “Angdaan Jeevan Sanjeevani Abhiyan”, with experts calling for greater public awareness to dispel misconceptions surrounding organ donation.

The programme, organised jointly by KIMS Group of Hospitals, the National Service Scheme (NSS), KIMS Educational Society and KIMS College of Nursing, was held under the theme “Organ Donation – Gift Life, Leave a Legacy.”

Doctors, nursing students and faculty members participated in the event.

Addressing the gathering, KIMS Group of Hospitals Chairman and Managing Director Dr. B. Bhaskar Rao described organ donation as one of the noblest humanitarian acts and urged families to discuss the issue openly and make informed decisions.

Director of Medical Education (Academics), KIMS Hospitals, Dr. S. Manimala Rao, said organ donation represented the highest form of service to humanity, adding that a decision to donate organs after death could offer hope to several patients awaiting transplants.

Program Director and Chair, Thoracic Organ Transplantation and Assist Devices, Dr. Sandeep Gangaya Attawar, explained that organs such as the heart, lungs, liver and kidneys could be retrieved after brain death for transplantation.

He said a single organ donor could save up to eight lives and improve the quality of life of more than 50 people through tissue donation.

Kidney transplant specialists Dr. Saharia and Dr. Uma Maheswara Rao said awareness about organ transplantation was increasing but stressed the need for greater public education, particularly among young people.

Chief Operating Officer, KIMS Hospitals, Secunderabad, Dr. Saurabh Lall, urged nursing students to become ambassadors of organ donation and spread awareness in society.

Families of organ donors were felicitated during the programme under the leadership of K. Manga Devi, President of the Organ Donation and Cadaver Transplant Service.

Experts also explained donor registration procedures and the medical protocol followed after brain death. Students took an organ donation pledge and resolved to actively participate in awareness campaigns.
