Telangana govt to set up Special Bureau for traffic management, road safety
Hyderabad, July 24 (TNT): Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Friday directed officials to establish a Special Bureau for traffic management and road safety, with a focus on scientific planning and technology-driven solutions to address congestion and road accidents.
Chairing a review meeting on traffic management, road safety, drug control and general security at MCRHRD Institute here, the Chief Minister instructed officials to finalise the organisational structure and guidelines for the proposed bureau after conducting a comprehensive study of traffic conditions across the state.
Revanth Reddy said the bureau should focus on improving traffic regulation rather than merely enforcing rules and directed officials to prepare guidelines for periodic reviews of traffic management measures every two to three months.
The Chief Minister stressed the need for traffic regulation plans based on weather conditions, work schedules and peak traffic hours.
He said detailed studies should be carried out before taking up new infrastructure projects.
Expressing concern over accidents caused by vehicles stopping on the Outer Ring Road (ORR), the Chief Minister directed officials to take preventive measures and ensure continuous surveillance to prevent unauthorised parking and vehicle stoppages.
He observed that traffic congestion in Hyderabad’s Core Urban Region was worsening due to frequent stops at closely spaced traffic signals.
He suggested construction of underpasses and elevated corridors to develop a signal-free traffic system and directed officials to examine the feasibility of implementing smart signalling systems.
