Modi, Albanese unveil India-Australia Sports Collaboration Roadmap at MCG

Melbourne, July 10 (TNT): Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese on Friday jointly unveiled the India-Australia Sports Collaboration Roadmap at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), reaffirming their commitment to deepen bilateral cooperation in sports as part of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

The event was attended by Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan and several Australian sporting legends, including former cricketer Steve Waugh and former Australia women’s cricketer Lisa Sthalekar.

The roadmap seeks to enhance cooperation in sports training and capacity building, sports science and technology, sports industry and investment, besides promoting greater institutional collaboration between the two countries.
It also envisages the organisation of an India-Australia Youth Sports Festival.

Addressing the gathering,  Prime Minister Modi described sports as a powerful force that brings people together and said the roadmap would diversify and strengthen the sporting partnership between the two nations.

Congratulating Australia on winning the Women’s Cricket World Cup, Modi noted that India and Australia were entering a significant decade in international sports, with India set to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030 and Australia hosting the Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2032.

He said these major sporting events would create new opportunities for closer cooperation not only in sports but also in related sectors such as sports infrastructure, technology and industry.

The two leaders also interacted with young athletes participating in exhibition matches of Kabaddi, Australian Football and cricket, highlighting growing people-to-people ties between the two countries.

The visit underscored the increasing role of sports, cultural exchanges and youth engagement as important pillars of the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
