NEET UG Re-Examination Conducted Peacefully Across Telangana and AP; One Candidate held for Malpractice
Hyderabad, June 21 (TNT):The NEET UG 2026 re-examination was conducted peacefully across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh on Sunday, with over 1.37 lakh candidates appearing for the medical entrance test amid tight security arrangements.
Authorities said elaborate measures were put in place at examination centres across both states to ensure the smooth conduct of the examination.
Additional police personnel were deployed for security and traffic management around the centres.
In Hyderabad, out of 27,954 registered candidates, 24,973 appeared for the examination.
To facilitate students, the state-owned road transport corporations in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh provided free travel to candidates upon production of their NEET hall tickets.
Telangana Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) had arranged free transportation for students appearing for the re-examination.
However, one case of alleged malpractice was reported from an examination centre in Ranganaguda under the limits of Adibatla Police Station on the outskirts of Hyderabad.
According to police, an 18-year-old candidate from Achampet allegedly attempted to cheat by concealing a mobile phone inside the examination premises before the commencement of the test.
Investigators said the student arrived at the Zilla Parishad High School examination centre around 7 a.m. and hid a mobile phone near the washroom ventilator, which was accessible from the adjoining compound wall. Later, he allegedly concealed the device inside a zip-lock cover and hid it in a flush tank inside the washroom.
Police said the examination centre had undergone thorough security checks and all candidates were frisked before entry. However, the device remained undetected as it had been hidden before the examination began.
During the examination, the candidate sought permission to visit the restroom, citing stomach pain. After he remained inside for an unusually long period, the invigilator directed staff members to check on him.
The student was allegedly found inside the washroom using the concealed mobile phone to search for answers on the internet.
Police personnel stationed at the centre immediately seized the device. Preliminary examination reportedly revealed that the candidate had been using the Google Chrome browser to search for answers during the examination.
During interrogation, the accused allegedly confessed to the offence and was taken into custody.
Based on a complaint lodged by the school administration, police registered a case under Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and provisions of the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024.
Except for the isolated incident, officials said the examination was conducted smoothly across both Telugu states. Further investigation into the malpractice case is underway.
