‘Gudgudi’ Makes Asia Premiere at MIFF 2026, Explores Themes of Self-Worth and Emotional Healing
Mumbai, June 20 (TNT): Hindi short fiction film “Gudgudi” made its Asia premiere at the 19th Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF 2026), drawing appreciation for its sensitive portrayal of self-worth, emotional resilience and mental well-being.
The 21-minute film marks the directorial debut of Manisha Makhwana.
The cast and crew, including producer Harsh Patel and lead actors Ahsaas Channa and Hridaansh Parekh, were felicitated by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) during the gala premiere on Friday evening.
Ahead of the screening, Makhwana and Patel interacted with the media, sharing insights into the film’s themes, creative process and festival journey.
Gudgudi follows the story of Ritu, a young woman working as a mascot at an amusement park who struggles with self-esteem while carrying the burden of personal responsibilities.
Her life begins to change through an emotional connection with Aarav, a child who sees beyond her costume and helps her rediscover hope and self-acceptance.
Speaking about the film, Makhwana described the mascot costume as a metaphorical shield concealing Ritu’s emotions and vulnerabilities from the outside world.
She said the story was inspired by her own personal experiences and sought to encourage people to acknowledge their emotions and seek support when needed.
“Ritu and Aarav’s journey shows that it is okay to put down one’s emotional baggage at times.
The film leaves the audience with hope and encourages people to open up to their loved ones,” she said.
The director noted that the film employs visual techniques such as high-angle shots and overlapping scenes to reflect the protagonist’s emotional state.
The story culminates in a symbolic moment when Ritu removes her mascot head before Aarav, representing acceptance, vulnerability and liberation.
Explaining the significance of the title, Makhwana said Gudgudi symbolizes joy and hope. “The film concludes with Aarav saying that he feels ‘gudgudi’ in his heart. That feeling captures the essence of the story,” she said.
The film was shot at Bal Vatika Park in Ahmedabad and incorporates several spontaneous moments that emerged during production.
Makhwana described the scene where Ritu embraces her circumstances as the most powerful moment in the film.
Producer Harsh Patel said the film highlights the importance of emotional well-being and honest conversations. “People should open up to trusted friends and family members. Emotional well-being begins with honest conversations,” he said.
Discussing the casting process, Makhwana revealed that the script was written with Ahsaas Channa in mind. She praised the actor for taking on a role in which her face remains hidden behind a mascot costume for most of the film.
Child actor Hridaansh Parekh was selected after impressing the casting team with his performance in an earlier project.
The director observed that mental health challenges today are increasingly influenced by the pressures of navigating both online and offline lives. She said the film aims to encourage self-reflection, emotional openness and acceptance.
Makhwana, who previously worked on acclaimed productions such as the film Stree and the television series The Family Man, acknowledged filmmakers Raj Nidimoru and Krishna D.K. as her mentors.
The film has already garnered positive responses on the international festival circuit and was showcased at the Short Film Corner of the Cannes Film Festival. Stressing the value of authentic storytelling, Makhwana said, “Honest stories always find their space.”
Producer Harsh Patel said the makers are exploring the possibility of a theatrical release by packaging multiple short films together for cinema exhibition. He added that Gudgudi will continue its journey through various film festivals in the coming months.
