PM to Commission Three Indigenous Naval Platforms in Kolkata on June 21
New Delhi, June 19 (TNT): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will commission three indigenously designed and built frontline naval platforms — INS Dunagiri, INS Sanshodhak and INS Agray — in Kolkata on June 21, in a major boost to India’s maritime and defence capabilities.
The commissioning ceremony will be held at Kolkata and marks another milestone in the country’s efforts towards self-reliance in defence production.
Designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), the three vessels represent key capabilities in maritime warfare, hydrographic surveying and anti-submarine operations.
INS Dunagiri, the fifth Project 17A stealth frigate, is equipped with advanced weapons and sensors, including BrahMos surface-to-surface missiles and Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) systems, significantly enhancing the Navy’s combat capabilities.
INS Sanshodhak, the fourth Survey Vessel (Large), is designed for coastal and deep-water hydrographic surveys and collection of oceanographic and geophysical data for defence and civilian applications.
The vessel is equipped with advanced survey systems, including Autonomous Underwater Vehicles and Remotely Operated Vehicles.
INS Agray, the fourth vessel of the Arnala-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft series, is equipped with lightweight torpedoes, indigenous rocket launchers and advanced sonar systems for detecting and neutralising underwater threats in coastal waters.
The Indian Navy said the three platforms reflect the growing strength of the country’s indigenous shipbuilding ecosystem, with indigenous content exceeding 75 per cent.
Their construction involved the participation of more than 200 micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and generated substantial direct and indirect employment.
The commissioning of the vessels underscores the collaborative efforts of the Government, the Indian Navy, defence shipyards, private industry and MSMEs in advancing the objectives of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and strengthening India’s maritime security architecture.
