Jio Platforms Enters Global Top 20 in WIPO Patent Rankings

MUMBAI, June 14 (TNT): Jio Platforms Limited, the technology arm of Reliance Industries Limited, has entered the global top 20 in the latest Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) rankings released by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), marking one of the sharpest rises by an Indian technology company in global innovation rankings.

According to the latest WIPO data for 2025, Jio Platforms climbed 320 positions to secure the 20th rank among global PCT applicants, joining leading technology companies such as Huawei, Samsung Electronics, Qualcomm, LG Electronics, Panasonic, Nokia, Google, Apple and Microsoft.

The company’s patent portfolio is focused on advanced digital technologies, including 5G, 5G Advanced, 6G, artificial intelligence, AI-native networks, cloud-native platforms, intelligent automation, radio access technologies, core network software, edge intelligence, fixed wireless access, network slicing and digital services infrastructure.

Commenting on the achievement, Akash M. Ambani, Managing Director, Jio Platforms Limited, said the company’s entry into the global top 20 reflected years of investment in transforming Jio into a deep-tech enterprise.

He said the achievement demonstrated the pace of innovation at Jio across multiple advanced technologies and dedicated the recognition to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat, which seeks to position India as a creator, owner and exporter of technology.

The ranking gain comes at a time when global PCT filings recorded less than one per cent growth, making Jio’s rise particularly significant.

Jio Platforms said it had cumulatively filed 6,817 patents as of March 31, 2026. Of these, 2,393 patents were filed in India and 4,424 in international jurisdictions. The company has secured 1,009 patent grants globally, including 538 in India and 471 overseas.

The company said its intellectual property portfolio is closely linked to technologies developed and commercialised at scale. It is also investing in emerging technologies including 5G and 6G radio systems, next-generation core networks, satellite communications and Agentic AI through its JioBrain initiative.

Industry observers view the milestone as a reflection of India’s growing shift from being primarily a technology consumer and deployer to becoming a creator of globally relevant intellectual property and advanced digital technologies.

Jio Platforms, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries, operates one of the world’s largest all-IP telecommunications networks through Reliance Jio Infocomm and continues to expand its presence across digital infrastructure, connectivity, platforms and emerging technology sectors.
