KIMS Hospitals Crosses 10,000 Brain Tumor Surgeries, Unveils Advanced Robotic Digital Microscope

Hyderabad, June 7 (TNT): KIMS Hospitals, Secunderabad, has crossed the milestone of 10,000 brain tumor surgeries, reinforcing its position as a leading centre for advanced neurosurgical care in the country.

Marking World Brain Tumor Day, KIMS Group of Hospitals Chairman and Managing Director Dr. B. Bhaskar Rao on Sunday inaugurated a cutting-edge Robotic Digital Microscope, which is expected to significantly improve surgical precision and patient outcomes in complex neurosurgical procedures.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Bhaskar Rao said rapid advancements in medical technology are transforming the treatment of brain and spinal disorders by making surgeries safer and recovery faster.

“The newly launched Robotic Digital Microscope will be a game-changer in the treatment of complex brain and spinal cord disorders. Early diagnosis, coupled with advanced technologies such as Gamma Knife Radiosurgery available at KIMS, can greatly improve treatment outcomes,” he said.

He also expressed concern over changing lifestyles among young people, citing excessive use of smartphones, laptops and high-volume earphones, along with inadequate physical activity, as factors that could adversely affect brain health.

Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon Dr. Manas Kumar Panigrahi cautioned against ignoring recurring headaches, particularly those that are severe during the early morning hours.

“A persistent headache, especially one that is intense upon waking up, should not be overlooked as it may be an early warning sign of a brain tumor,” he said.

Dr. Panigrahi revealed that nearly 10 per cent of the 10,000 brain tumor surgeries performed at KIMS involved children, highlighting that brain tumors are not limited to older age groups.

Explaining the significance of the new robotic technology, he said neurosurgical procedures require exceptional accuracy due to the delicate nature of the brain and spinal cord. The Robotic Digital Microscope provides high-definition visualization, enabling surgeons to clearly distinguish tumors from healthy tissue and thereby reduce the risk of damage to critical structures.

He also advocated the inclusion of brain screening in routine preventive healthcare packages and insurance plans, noting that while cardiac evaluations are widely covered, brain scans are often excluded.

Consultant Neurosurgeon Dr. Shwetha said symptoms of brain tumors vary depending on their size and location. Common warning signs include persistent headaches, vomiting, blurred or double vision, seizures, weakness in the limbs, speech difficulties, memory loss and sudden behavioural changes.

She noted that brain tumors are among the most common cancers affecting children and that an increasing number of cases are being reported among young and middle-aged individuals.

Dr. Shwetha urged people to adopt healthy lifestyles, avoid self-medication for chronic headaches and seek timely medical advice from neurologists or neurosurgeons when symptoms persist.

The event was attended by neurosurgeons Dr. Chandrasekhar Naidu, Dr. Sujith Kumar, Dr. Vijayanth, Dr. Gopal Krishna and Dr. C.V.S. Dasaradhi, along with recovered patients and children.

A painting competition was also organised for children as part of the World Brain Tumor Day observance, and prizes were distributed to the winners.
