India’s Telecom Subscriber Base Crosses 1.33 Billion in April 2026: TRAI

New Delhi, May 26 (TNT) : India’s total telephone subscriber base increased to 1,337.54 million at the end of April 2026, registering a monthly growth rate of 0.52 per cent, according to data released by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

The total number of wireless subscribers rose from 1,282.33 million in March 2026 to 1,288.96 million in April 2026, while wireline subscribers increased from 48.25 million to 48.58 million during the same period, the Regulatory Authority said in a release here on Wednesday.

Broadband subscribers in the country increased from 1,065.88 million at the end of March 2026 to 1,073.44 million at the end of April 2026, reflecting a monthly growth rate of 0.71 per cent.

Among telecom operators, Reliance Jio retained its lead in broadband services with 526.94 million subscribers, followed by Bharti Airtel with 373 million subscribers and Vodafone Idea with 128.92 million subscribers.

The report noted that India’s overall tele-density improved from 93.26 per cent at the end of March 2026 to 93.69 per cent at the end of April 2026. Urban tele-density stood at 152.11 per cent, while rural tele-density was recorded at 60.74 per cent.

TRAI also reported that 14.74 million mobile subscribers submitted requests for Mobile Number Portability (MNP) during April 2026.

The number of active wireless subscribers, based on peak Visitor Location Register (VLR) data, stood at 1,193.57 million in April 2026, accounting for 93.84 per cent of the total wireless subscriber base.

The regulator further said the number of Machine-to-Machine (M2M) cellular mobile connections increased from 123.88 million in March 2026 to 127.48 million in April 2026. Bharti Airtel held the highest share in the M2M segment with 79.01 million connections.
