Two senior CPI (Maoist) leaders surrender before Telangana Police
Hyderabad, May 26 (TNT): In a major setback to the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist), two senior underground leaders — Central Committee Member (CCM) and Bihar-Jharkhand Special Area Committee (BJSAC) secretary Pasunoori Narahari alias Vishwanath alias Salai Da, and State Committee Member (SCM) Medara Danamma alias Latha alias Poonam alias Joba — surrendered before Telangana Director General of Police (DGP) CV Anand here on Tuesday.
Addressing a press conference on the occasion, Anand described the development as a significant blow to the Maoist organisation, stating that the outfit’s last surviving Eastern Regional Bureau was “on the verge of collapse” following the surrender of the two senior cadres.
The DGP said Pasunoori Narahari, a native of Somidi village in Hanumakonda district, joined the Maoist movement in 1982 and rose through the ranks to become a Central Committee Member in 2017.
He was associated with the organisation’s technical and military wings and allegedly possessed expertise in the manufacture and maintenance of firearms, rockets, grenades and booby traps.
He said Medara Danamma, originally from Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh, joined the movement in the late 1980s and later became a State Committee Member in the Bihar-Jharkhand Special Area Committee. She was also involved in organisational and technical operations within the banned outfit.
As per the Telangana government’s rehabilitation policy, Narahari was provided a reward amount of ₹25 lakh, while Danamma received ₹20 lakh through demand drafts, the DGP said.
He added that further rehabilitation benefits, including healthcare support, would also be extended to surrendered cadres.
He said that during 2026 so far, a total of 264 Maoist cadres had surrendered in Telangana, including three Central Committee Members and 11 State Committee Members, while 238 firearms had been recovered.
The Telangana Police appealed to the remaining active cadres from Telangana, including senior Maoist leader Muppala Laxman Rao alias Ganapathi, to surrender and join the mainstream.
