BJP to form Govt in West Bengal; Suvendu Adhikari to Take Oath as CM Tomorrow

Kolkata, May 8 (TNT): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to form the government in West Bengal for the first time after securing a historic victory in the Assembly elections.

Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari was elected leader of the BJP Legislature Party in West Bengal on Friday, paving the way for him to become the state’s first BJP Chief Minister.

Adhikari’s name was proposed at the Legislature Party meeting and formally announced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the presence of newly elected BJP MLAs and senior party leaders.

The swearing-in ceremony of the new BJP government is scheduled to be held at the Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata on Saturday.

Senior BJP leaders, including Amit Shah, are expected to attend the event.

Chief Minister-designate Suvendu Adhikari said the new BJP government would fulfil all promises made in the party’s election manifesto and work in close coordination with the Centre to meet the aspirations of the people of West Bengal.

Adhikari has emerged as one of the BJP’s strongest leaders in West Bengal after playing a major role in expanding the party’s presence in the state.

He had earlier defeated former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in high-profile electoral contests, significantly strengthening his position within the BJP.

Before joining the BJP, Adhikari held several key positions in the All India Trinamool Congress  led by Mamata Banerjee.

He was also earlier linked to the Saradha Group chit fund scam, though the matter remains under investigation.

The BJP’s victory is being viewed as a major political shift in West Bengal politics, where the Trinamool Congress had remained the dominant force for over a decade.
