New Delhi, Apr 18 (TNT): Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy on Saturday accused opposition parties of blocking key legislations, including the Women’s Reservation Bill and the Delimitation Bill, terming the move a “historic mistake”.
Addressing a press conference in New Dlhi, Kishan Reddy alleged that the Indian National Congress and its allies failed to present a clear stand on the Bills and adopted contradictory positions, leading to their obstruction in Parliament.
The Union Minister said the Centre had clearly outlined its proposal to increase parliamentary and assembly seats by 50 per cent, and had conveyed its intent through all-party meetings and public outreach initiatives led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Despite this, he claimed, the opposition stalled the process even when there was scope for consensus.
Referring to past efforts, he said attempts to pass the Women’s Reservation Bill had been obstructed several times since 1996, alleging that opposition parties had consistently hindered women’s political empowerment.
He further accused the opposition of shifting its stance on concerns related to southern states, creating confusion among the public.
According to him, the developments have adversely affected the aspirations of women and people in southern India.
The Union Minister also criticised opposition leaders over remarks on national security, alleging that they undermined the armed forces.
He maintained that the government remains committed to equitable development across states and enhancing political representation.
Calling the opposition’s actions politically motivated, he said they must take responsibility and apologise to the public, particularly women and citizens of southern states.
