Hyderabad, Apr 15 (TNT) : A retired Army jawan, Cheerla Ramudu, who courageously caught a habitual offender attempting a chain-snatching, was felicitated by Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar, here on Thursday.
At a function held at the old Commissionerate office in Basheerbagh here, Sajjanar honoured Ramudu with a shawl and presented him with a cash reward in recognition of his bravery.
The incident occurred on April 14 at the Amberpet Irani Hotel bus stop, when the accused attempted to snatch Ramudu’s gold chain as he was alighting from a bus.
Despite his age, Ramudu resisted firmly, overpowered the accused, and alerted police by dialling 100.
Responding swiftly, Amberpet patrol police reached the spot within minutes and took the accused into custody.
During investigation, the accused was identified as Abdul Mannan, an auto driver from Mallepally, with as many as 31 prior cases across Telangana.
He is also listed in a suspect sheet at Habibnagar Police Station and is a most-wanted accused in a case registered at Mangalhat Police Station.
Police have registered a case against Abdul Mannan, arrested him, and remanded him to judicial custody. His associates, Kotesh and Mallesh, are absconding.
The Commissioner also appreciated Amberpet SI Suresh and constables Dinesh Reddy and Bharat Kumar for their prompt response, awarding them commendation certificates.
Speaking on the occasion, Sajjanar said Ramudu proved that “once a soldier, always a soldier,” and described his courage in confronting the criminal as inspiring.
He urged citizens to act like “police without uniform” to help curb crime in society.
