Hyderabad, Apr 13 (TNT): Soumya Mishra, Director General of Prisons & Correctional Services, inaugurated a newly constructed barrack at Central Prison, Chanchalguda near here on Monday, aimed at enhancing accommodation capacity and improving inmate living conditions.
The new facility will house an additional 84 prisoners and is expected to help reduce overcrowding in the prison.
Addressing officials, Mishra said the project, pending for nearly five years, was completed within six months, reflecting the department’s focus on strengthening prison infrastructure and improving inmate management.
She added that such initiatives contribute to a more humane and reform-oriented prison environment.
During her visit, the DG Prisons inspected various sections of the facility, including the prison hospital.
Mishra, who reviewed the functioning of pathology and blood testing laboratories, checked the medical store for proper disposal of expired medicines, and interacted with medical staff and inmates.
She also assessed the outcomes of a recent medical camp conducted at the prison and directed officials to ensure timely treatment, continuous monitoring and follow-up care for inmates diagnosed with health conditions.
The Prisons and Correctional Services Department reiterated its commitment to infrastructure development, decongestion and the overall welfare and rehabilitation of prisoners.
Senior officials, including IG Prisons N. Murali Babu, DIG Prisons Dr. D. Srinivas and Superintendent N. Shiva Kumar Goud, were present at the event.
